Did Elvis Presley Ever Sing “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”?
It is easy to understand why so many listeners believe “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” sounds like an Elvis Presley song. The rockabilly rhythm, playful vocal delivery, and unmistakable 1950s rock and roll atmosphere feel remarkably close to the musical world Elvis helped make famous. Hearing it without knowing its history, someone could easily imagine Elvis stepping onto a stage and performing it himself.
But Elvis never recorded “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” He died on August 16, 1977, while Freddie Mercury wrote the song in 1979. Queen recorded it for The Game, released in 1980. So any recording online claiming to feature Elvis singing the song is not an authentic Elvis recording from his lifetime.
What makes the confusion fascinating is that Elvis is part of the reason the song sounds the way it does. Freddie Mercury deliberately embraced a stripped down rockabilly style associated with the early era of rock and roll. Mercury himself described the song as his tribute to Elvis, making the King’s influence an important part of its identity.
Elvis never lived long enough to hear Queen turn that influence into one of their biggest hits. Yet that may be the most beautiful part of the story. Two years after Elvis was gone, his musical shadow was still powerful enough to inspire Freddie Mercury to create a song that millions of people would hear and immediately think of the King.
