Put Elvis Presley in a black tuxedo and something changed. The dazzling entertainer seemed to disappear for a moment, replaced by a man with the elegance of old Hollywood. No cape, no rhinestones, no elaborate stage costume. Just dark tailoring, that unmistakable face and a presence strong enough to make simplicity feel extraordinary.
The tuxedo also revealed something photographs of Elvis captured particularly well: contrast. He could look intensely confident in one frame and almost shy in the next. Against the simplicity of black and white, his dark hair, expressive eyes and famous smile became the focus. The clothes were elegant, but Elvis was the reason people kept looking.
Years later, his white jumpsuits would become inseparable from the image of Elvis in Las Vegas, representing the larger-than-life performer who could command an arena. The tuxedo belonged to another Elvis: polished, understated and closer to the young man whose natural charisma needed very little decoration. Both were authentic parts of him, which may be why choosing between them is surprisingly difficult.
Nearly fifty years after his death, those photographs still raise the same question. Was Elvis at his most handsome when everything was stripped back to a simple black tuxedo, or was the spectacular white jumpsuit the look that truly belonged to the King?
Which Elvis would you choose: black tuxedo or white jumpsuit?
