On February 24, 1987, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses stepped aboard The Statler Brothers’ tour bus in Old Tucson, Arizona. Elizabeth Taylor was just three days away from turning 55, and the four country singers had something special planned.
First, The Statler Brothers sang “Happy Birthday” for Elizabeth Taylor. Then Harold Reid stepped forward with an announcement that made the occasion even more memorable.
According to Jimmy Fortune, Harold Reid told Elizabeth Taylor that the group had written a song especially for her.
The Statler Brothers then performed their beautiful country hit, “Elizabeth.”
But there was something Elizabeth Taylor might not have realized. Jimmy Fortune hadn’t actually written the song specifically for the famous actress. The real story began several years earlier, with three seemingly unrelated encounters that Jimmy Fortune would never forget.
Three Unexpected Encounters With the Same Name
In 1983, Jimmy Fortune was still relatively new to The Statler Brothers. Jimmy Fortune had joined the group after longtime tenor Lew DeWitt stepped aside because of health problems.
Although Jimmy Fortune was already an experienced singer, songwriting was unfamiliar territory. Jimmy Fortune had a melody in mind and wondered whether the group might consider recording something original.
Harold Reid offered a straightforward answer: If the song was good enough, The Statler Brothers would record it.
Then something unusual happened.
While shopping at a Kroger supermarket before a trip to Oklahoma, Jimmy Fortune overheard a mother correcting a little girl who had been taking items from the shelves. The child’s name was Elizabeth.
The name stayed in Jimmy Fortune’s mind.
Later, aboard the tour bus, Harold Reid and Don Reid suggested watching the 1956 movie Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean.
Jimmy Fortune had never seen the movie before. Watching Elizabeth Taylor’s performance made a lasting impression, and once again, the name Elizabeth caught Jimmy Fortune’s attention.
But the strangest coincidence was still ahead.
The Woman Who Helped Inspire a No. 1 Hit
During a concert in Oklahoma, a young woman approached the stage and grabbed Jimmy Fortune’s hand. The woman repeatedly introduced herself as Elizabeth.
After the performance, Jimmy Fortune encountered the woman again while signing autographs. By then, hearing the same name so many times had become impossible to ignore.
That night, Jimmy Fortune returned to the hotel and began writing a song built around the name Elizabeth.
Using a small tape recorder, Jimmy Fortune captured the melody and early vocal ideas. In a later interview, Jimmy Fortune recalled experimenting with recorded harmony parts to help the other members imagine how the finished song might sound.
The following day, Jimmy Fortune played the recording for The Statler Brothers.
The group liked what they heard.
The song became part of the group’s 1983 album Today, and on March 17, 1984, “Elizabeth” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s country singles chart.
For Jimmy Fortune, the achievement was extraordinary. A songwriter who had only recently begun writing songs had created a major country hit for one of America’s most beloved vocal groups.
When Elizabeth Taylor Finally Heard the Song
Nearly three years after that chart-topping success, the story came full circle.
Elizabeth Taylor was filming the television movie Poker Alice in Old Tucson when The Statler Brothers received an opportunity to sing for the actress.
The date was February 24, 1987, just before Elizabeth Taylor’s 55th birthday.
Elizabeth Taylor visited the group’s tour bus, where the singers performed “Happy Birthday” before introducing “Elizabeth.”
Harold Reid’s playful suggestion that the song had been written especially for Elizabeth Taylor made the moment even more remarkable. In reality, Jimmy Fortune had written the song long before the meeting, inspired by an ordinary little girl, a Hollywood movie, and a woman in a concert audience.
Years afterward, Jimmy Fortune remembered Elizabeth Taylor’s kindness and friendliness. Despite being one of the world’s biggest movie stars, Elizabeth Taylor made the musicians feel comfortable, joking and talking with the group.
Jimmy Fortune also remembered being overwhelmed by the realization that Jimmy Fortune was singing a song called “Elizabeth” directly to Elizabeth Taylor.
Jimmy Fortune later described the performance as one of the highlights of a remarkable career.
A Country Song That Found Its Way Back to Hollywood
There is something wonderfully fitting about the journey of “Elizabeth.”
A young songwriter heard a name at a supermarket, encountered the same name in a classic movie, and heard it again from a concertgoer. Those coincidences helped produce a country hit that millions of listeners would come to know.
Then, years later, the very actress who appeared in the movie that helped inspire the song heard The Statler Brothers perform it in person.
For longtime fans, “Elizabeth” remains one of Jimmy Fortune’s most recognizable contributions to The Statler Brothers’ catalog. But knowing the story behind the recording gives the song another layer of meaning.
What began with a few unexpected encounters eventually became an unforgettable birthday performance for Elizabeth Taylor herself.
And that is the kind of country music story that becomes even more special with the passing years.
