In April 2020, Billy Joe Shaver gave what would become his final widely reported performance. There was no concert hall, no cheering audience, and no stage waiting for one of  country music’s greatest songwriters.

There was only his kitchen, a familiar guitarist, and a song Billy Joe Shaver had written with his son nearly three decades earlier.

That son, Eddy Shaver, had been gone for almost twenty years.

Longtime guitarist Jeremy Lynn Woodall had visited Billy Joe Shaver’s home to record a performance for a local radio station while COVID-19 restrictions kept musicians off the road. The song they recorded was Live Forever.

To understand why that simple kitchen performance mattered so much, you have to go back to a time when Billy Joe Shaver and Eddy Shaver were still making  music together.

The Melody Eddy Shaver Gave His Father

Eddy Shaver wasn’t simply following his famous father into country music. Eddy Shaver was an accomplished guitarist who had worked with musicians including Dwight Yoakam and Waylon Jennings. For years, Eddy Shaver also played alongside Billy Joe Shaver, bringing a powerful electric-guitar sound to his father’s songwriting.

One day, Eddy Shaver brought his father a melody.

It was something Billy Joe Shaver couldn’t get out of his head.

During a 1994 interview with Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air, Billy Joe Shaver explained that he had carried the melody around for approximately six months, searching for the right words.

He knew Eddy Shaver had given him something special. Eventually, the lyrics came together, with Eddy Shaver contributing to the words as well.

The result was Live Forever, a song about the possibility that something meaningful can remain long after a person’s life ends.

At the time, Billy Joe Shaver and Eddy Shaver were still performing together. Neither could have known how personally meaningful that song would eventually become to their family.

New Year’s Eve 2000 Changed Everything

By the end of the 1990s, Billy Joe Shaver had endured devastating losses. His mother, Victory, and his wife, Brenda, both died in 1999.

Then, on December 31, 2000, Eddy Shaver died at just 38 years old.

Billy Joe Shaver had lost his son, longtime guitarist, and musical partner.

But Billy Joe Shaver continued performing, and Live Forever remained part of his shows.

In a 2014 NPR profile, Billy Joe Shaver spoke about still feeling connected to Eddy Shaver. The reporter described how Billy Joe sometimes finished a song by looking upward and saying:

“I love you, Eddy.”

Those four words explained something that audiences could hear whenever Billy Joe Shaver performed the song they had written together.

A Small Texas Flag Beside Eddy Shaver’s Grave

One of the most revealing accounts of their relationship came from Texas music journalist Michael Corcoran.

In a 2002 profile, Corcoran accompanied Billy Joe Shaver to Eddy Shaver’s grave.

Someone had placed a small Texas flag in the ground. Written on it was a message drawn from Live Forever, expressing the belief that Eddy Shaver would always remain present.

Billy Joe Shaver recognized the words immediately and explained their connection to the song he had written with Eddy Shaver.

What began as a melody shared between father and son had become something people were using to remember Eddy Shaver himself.

For Billy Joe Shaver, that connection was not merely a songwriting achievement. It was part of how he continued to remember his son.

The Kitchen Performance That Became a Farewell

Nearly twenty years later, Billy Joe Shaver was still singing that same song.

When Jeremy Lynn Woodall recorded the kitchen performance in April 2020, Billy Joe Shaver was 80 years old.

On October 28, 2020, Billy Joe Shaver died in Waco, Texas, following a stroke. He was 81.

Only after Billy Joe Shaver’s death did the recording take on the significance of a farewell. It was a remarkably modest setting for a songwriter whose words had helped define outlaw  country music.

And the story did not end there.

Two Years Later, Willie Nelson Helped Carry the Song Forward

On November 11, 2022, New West Records released Live Forever: A Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver, featuring twelve performances of his songs.

The opening track was Live Forever, performed by Willie Nelson with Lucinda Williams.

George Strait, Miranda Lambert, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and other artists also contributed recordings to the tribute.

It was a fitting continuation of the song’s remarkable history.

Eddy Shaver had created the melody. Billy Joe Shaver had helped turn it into a song that audiences remembered for decades. After both father and son were gone, Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams gave it another recording.

There was nothing prophetic about that kitchen performance in April 2020. Billy Joe Shaver had already spent years singing the song after losing Eddy Shaver.

But when people returned to that recording after his death, its meaning had changed.

The father and son who wrote Live Forever were both gone. The song they made together was still being sung.
