This was 1969, less than three years after interracial marriage became legal nationwide. Capitol’s country chief, Ken Nelson, told him, “Merle, I don’t believe the world is ready for this yet.” Haggard later recalled it as the only time Nelson intervened in his music. The label instead released a forceful response to Vietnam War protesters. It reached No. 1, reinforcing the public image Merle had wanted to broaden.
