Merle Haggard had a different follow-up in mind after “Okie from Muskogee” won him a conservative following: a love song about a white man and a Black woman. Capitol turned it down. The story followed childhood friends whose feelings deepened as they grew older, only to face the racial boundaries around them. Merle wanted listeners to hear a side of him that “Okie” hadn’t shown. This was 1969, less than three years after interracial marriage became legal nationwide. Capitol’s country chief, Ken Nelson, told him, “Merle, I don’t believe the world is ready for this yet.” Haggard later recalled it as the only time Nelson intervened in his music. The label instead released a forceful response to Vietnam War protesters. It reached No. 1, reinforcing the public image Merle had wanted to broaden. His love song finally appeared in 1972, ninth on an album’s track list. It never became a single. Merle nevertheless called it his favorite because it “tells it like it is.”
